Jonathan Goes Country (1990)

Album by Jonathan Richman

Jonathan Goes Country finds Jonathan Richman leaning fully into classic country sounds with a wide-eyed earnestness that feels completely sincere. I really only knew him as the singer who popped up in There’s Something About Mary, which earned me some scorn from my more serious music friends, but this record made it clear there’s a lot more going on here.

What stands out most is how un-ironic the whole thing feels. Richman isn’t parodying country or treating it like a novelty — he commits to it completely. The arrangements are simple and traditional, and his delivery is disarmingly straightforward. “Corner Store” especially stuck with me, capturing that small, everyday intimacy in a way that feels almost conversational. But the album is full of moments like that — modest, heartfelt songs that find meaning in ordinary life.

There’s something refreshing about how direct this record is. It doesn’t try to modernize country or make a clever statement about it. It just lives there, comfortably and honestly. I really liked this album — not because it’s flashy or groundbreaking, but because it feels completely genuine.

Verdict: Great
