The Sweet Keeper (1990)

The Sweet Keeper was another new discovery for me. I wasn’t familiar with Tanita Tikaram before this, but I found myself quietly appreciating the mood she creates here. The album sits in a subdued space between indie-pop and folk-rock. It’s measured and restrained rather than flashy or overly dramatic. Her voice isn’t a traditional pop instrument — it doesn’t soar or dominate — but there’s something compelling about her tone and phrasing. She leans into understatement, and that subtle delivery gives the songs a grounded, reflective quality.

At the same time, she clearly understands pop structure. Songs like “We Almost Got It Together” show definite pop sensibilities — strong melodic instincts and clean songwriting — even if they’re delivered with restraint instead of bombast. The hooks are there; they’re just not pushed aggressively to the front.

This may not be for everyone. It’s not loud, not theatrical, and not built around obvious payoffs. But there’s a steadiness and maturity to it that I found appealing. It’s thoughtful, well-crafted, and quietly effective.

Verdict: Good
