The Joy of Sects (2024)

This album feels like stepping into a strange, stylish little universe. It’s fast, punchy, funny, and just a little dangerous. Musically it bounces between punk, glam, surf rock, and pop, sounding like a band raised on the B-52s, the Ramones, the Pixies, and the Cramps.

“Detritus Adronicus” kicks things off in playful fashion with punchy drums and sharp guitar riffs, immediately setting the tone that this record is going to move fast. “Bang Bang” leans into that early B-52s mix of camp and chaos, silly on the surface but with a bite underneath.

“Sycophants Paradise” was one of the real standouts for me, driven by a riff that oddly reminded me of the Peter Gunn theme. Cool, relentless, and just a little sinister. “Join Our Death Cult” might be the catchiest moment on the album, while “Superhuman Superhighway” barrels forward like a bullet train, snarling its way into a huge chorus.

And honestly, the fun never really lets up. The whole record rides this strange, stylish wave of energy from start to finish.

What I liked most about The Joy of Sects is that it never feels safe or predictable. The songs pull you in with bright melodies while something darker and stranger lurks just underneath.

It’s chaotic, funny, stylish, and just plain fun.

Verdict: Solid
