Twilight Zone “Escape Clause” (1959)

Season 1 episode 6

A hypochondriac sells his soul to the devil.

This one leans hard into dark comedy.

David Wayne plays the lead with a real theatrical energy that makes this one feel a little campy which signals that this episode wants to have fun with the Faustian bargain idea. Instead of tragedy, we get satire. Instead of dread, we get absurdity.

There are moments that work — Thomas Gomez plays a fine and different kind of devil, his amusement seems to be cool and calm with a hint of mischievous energy. More imp than lord of the damned.

The concept itself is strong. Immortality not as a gift, but as something tedious and hollow that twists into a curse.

But for me, this one never quite clicks.

The tone feels broad. The humor pushes a little too far into theatrical territory. And while the premise is clever, it doesn’t carry the emotional or philosophical weight that some of the earlier episodes managed.

Twilight Zone Verdict: Didn’t Land
