The scientist who can take it or leave it.
We’re back with Hank Pym, and Marvel is clearly trying to decide what kind of hero he’s supposed to be.
Unlike the Fantastic Four, who are permanently altered, or the Hulk, who is cursed, or Thor, who embodies fantasy, or Spider-Man, who carries responsibility like a weight — Pym’s power comes in a bottle.
A serum.
Measured. Mixed. Controlled..
He can shrink when he wants to.
And stop when he wants to.
That distinction matters.

Pym isn’t transformed. He’s equipped.
It’s science as power — but not the tragic accident kind. This isn’t cosmic radiation or atomic catastrophe. It’s controlled experimentation. The first time Marvel presents heroism as something you can put on and take off.
Before Iron Man makes tech glamorous, Pym is already doing it quietly, alone in a lab. And apparently talking to himself.
There’s something lonely about him. No team. No skyline swings. Just ants and microscopes. He doesn’t revel in the power the way Thor does. He doesn’t wrestle with it like Banner. He studies it.
Then, of course, the communists show up. If you need a villain in 1962, draw a red star on their hat and have them kidnap a scientist. Pym gets pulled into action not because he’s chasing glory — insect-sized espionage and a few well-timed judo chops.
And yes — the judo chops remain undefeated.
The real highlight isn’t the villains. It’s the perspective. Tiny Ant-Man navigating enormous rooms. Ant cavalry charging into battle. Kirby’s scale work is inventive and dynamic, even if the story still feels like it’s half anthology pulp, half superhero prototype.

Scientist? A spy? A superhero?
The book doesn’t quite know yet.
But what it does introduce is a new idea: power doesn’t always have to be permanent.
Sometimes it’s procedural.
Sometimes it’s clinical.
Sometimes it’s isolation.
Marvel is still experimenting — and Ant-Man feels like the test case.
The ants obey.
The villains retreat.
And Hank Pym goes back to his lab.
For the first time, power comes with an off switch.
