Melt the Honey (2024)

PACKS is a new band for me, and I have a feeling they might become a regular feature on future playlists.

This album sits somewhere between DIY pop and indie rock, and the whole thing feels intimate — like it was recorded in a comfortable space without worrying too much about polishing every detail. There’s a little clatter in the backgroundof some tracks, small noises and textures giving it a natural feel instead of something overly produced.

More than anything, this record seems focused on creating a mood. The lyrics are often minimal and repeated, and the songs feel more focused on building a vibe than telling a clear story. The fuzz and distortion add to that atmosphere rather than distracting from it.

“89 Days” opens things right in that space. It’s dreamy and gentle, but still anchored by a rock backbone that keeps the song moving. The guitar and bass provide structure while the vocal floats above everything.

“Honey” leans more into a 90s indie rock feel, with layered vocals and a sound that reminded me of a slower Pixies-style track. “Pearly Whites” pushes that fuzzy, trippy sound a little further, adding a heavier edge without losing the dreaminess.

“Missy” ended up being another favorite. It carries that same Pixies-adjacent energy and has one of my favorite vocal performances here. Later on, “Paige Restart” plays with the idea of someone new entering your life and changing how everything works, using this fun metaphor of a system being rewired.

Overall this album feels relaxed and unforced. It’s not trying to overwhelm you with big gestures or complicated songwriting. Instead it settles into a warm, fuzzy atmosphere and lets the songs move along at their own pace.

The more time I spent with it, the more that charm really stuck with me.

Verdict: Excellent
