Album by Willy DeVille

This is an album built around New Orleans R&B, soul, and blues, with a real sense of history running through it. It also brings in some heavy hitters like Dr. John and Allen Toussaint, which makes it a lot of fun.

More than anything, it sounds like it was made by someone who genuinely loves this music.

It’s earthy, relaxed, and full of groove. The band sounds great, and Willy DeVille fits right into it — his voice carries the songs with a kind of easy confidence that makes everything feel natural.

If I had to nitpick anything, the production is maybe a little too clean for my taste. I like a little more swamp in my New Orleans sound. But that’s hardly a detriment.

There are a lot of fun moments across the album. “Hello My Lover,” “Do Me Good,” “Key to My Heart,” “Every Dog Has Its Day,” and “Big Blue Diamonds” all highlight different sides of the style, moving between R&B, soul, and blues without losing that core groove.

It’s an eclectic mix, but it holds together well — the kind of album that’s easy to settle into and just enjoy.
