There are plenty of modern bands trying to recreate the sound of 1980s arena rock. Magnum doesn’t have to. They were there the first time.

Here Comes the Rain is filled with soaring guitar riffs, shimmering synths, huge vocal harmonies, dramatic melodies, and the kind of polished production that once filled arenas. It sits comfortably between melodic rock and hard rock, never becoming too heavy or too pop, while occasionally brushing up against progressive rock without fully committing to that style.

“Run Into the Shadows” perfectly captures what the album does best. Big, uplifting hooks, towering guitars, layers of keyboards, and enough theatrical flair that it wouldn’t have sounded out of place alongside Journey, Foreigner, or other melodic rock giants during the late 1980s. It’s the record’s defining statement and showcases nearly every texture that appears throughout the album.

Elsewhere, “Some Kind of Treachery” slows the pace, allowing the band’s melodic instincts to take center stage. The quieter arrangement gives the song a welcome sense of drama, while “Blue Tango” leans into bluesier guitar work that briefly pushes the record toward a heavier sound.

Those moments keep Here Comes the Rain from becoming too predictable.

This is a very professional style of songcraft. Every performance feels confident. Every arrangement feels carefully considered. Magnum sounds like a band that knows exactly who it is and has no interest in pretending otherwise.

The album occasionally gives the impression that it’s building toward a larger progressive rock concept, even if it never fully becomes one. That sense of scale adds just enough intrigue to keep the songs feeling connected without overwhelming the straightforward melodic rock foundation.

While Here Comes the Rain isn’t exactly my cup of tea, I enjoyed spending time with it anyway. It’s a solid reminder that classic melodic rock still has plenty of life when it’s performed by musicians who helped define it in the first place.
