Album by Lou Rawls
There’s a lot to like on It’s Supposed To Be Fun, especially once it settles in.
Lou Rawls’ voice is definitely the centerpiece — that deep, smooth baritone carries so much naturally. At times, though, the late ’80s/early ’90s production feels a little too polished, and it can mute some of that natural charisma.
As the album goes on, it really starts to find its footing. The more grounded, blues-influenced tracks give his voice something to sit in, and everything opens up a bit.
“Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” works well, and “Any Day Now” and “All Around the World” are both really enjoyable. “This Bitter Earth” stands out as one of the best performances here, and “If You Got to Make a Fool of Somebody” lands in that same sweet spot.
It’s the kind of album where, when everything lines up, it really works.
