Written and directed by Jon Watts – Starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams and Poorna Jagannathan
Two professional fixers are called to the same job and are forced to work together over one very long night in New York.
Wolfs is a fun little movie.
The opening few minutes sold me. There’s a dead body in a hotel room, a woman is panicked, and she desperately needs her phone, which happens to be in her bag. Underneath said body. Oh, and it’s Amy Ryan. Needless to say, I was hooked.
I wasn’t expecting Wolfs to be this funny. I went into it thinking I was getting more of a crime thriller, but this is really more in the style of films like Midnight Run and The Nice Guys with Brad Pitt and George Clooney spending most of the movie getting on each other’s nerves.
Pitt and Clooney play rival fixers who are both called to the same job. A dead body has turned up in a high-rise hotel, and a powerful woman needs someone to make the problem disappear. When the two fixers realize they’ve both been hired, they have to work together to get through the night.
That’s pretty much the movie. One problem leads to another, and the two of them spend the night dealing with a situation that gets worse and worse.
Pitt and Clooney are fun here as they bounce off each other. Austin Abrams is also really good as the Kid, who gets pulled into their mess and becomes an unexpected part of the night. And we get a really fun turn from Poorna Jagannathan as June, the off-the-books doctor they visit during the film.
There are a few times when the movie stretches the comedy a little too broadly, but this film knows exactly what kind of movie it is supposed to be and sticks to that formula.
Another fun aspect of Wolfs is that it never spends much time explaining how this world of professional fixers works. It almost exists in a reality just to the left of ours where all the rules don’t apply.
This one feels like a throwback. It’s built around a couple of movie stars, a fun premise and the chemistry between them. There’s action, comedy, car chases, banter and a few fun surprises.
Wolfs isn’t trying to reinvent anything. It just gives Brad Pitt and George Clooney a fun little world to play around in, and I had a good time hanging out there.
Verdict: Good Time
