Season 1, Episode 35
Written by Rod Serling – Directed by Alvin Ganzer and Robert Parrish – Starring Jack Warden, Abraham Sofaer, and Robert Sorrells
A mysterious new pitcher joins a struggling baseball team and suddenly gives them a chance at a championship.
A Twilight Zone episode set in Hoboken and built around baseball? This one leans all the way into “Joisey”. Unfortunately, it also leans into the broad comedy that the series has experimented with throughout the season, complete with some goofy, almost cartoonish sound effects.
Jack Warden is the highlight. As the manager of the struggling Zephyrs, he has just the right mix of frustration and sarcasm. His exchanges with the team’s owner are particularly entertaining, full of the kind of barbs that feel perfectly suited to a New Jersey baseball team that’s seen better days. Warden seems completely at home in this material, and his delivery gives the episode much of its personality.
The arrival of Casey changes everything for the Zephyrs. He’s an unusual prospect, but once his identity and abilities become clear, he gives the team a chance to do something they haven’t managed in a long time: win. For a while, the episode settles into a familiar sports story, with an unlikely player helping a struggling team chase a championship.
But the comedy never really clicked for me. The broad performances and goofy touches kept pulling me away from the story rather than drawing me into it. I’ve found that the lighter episodes of The Twilight Zone tend to work less well for me than the psychological horror and more serious stories, and this one doesn’t change that.
There’s some fun in watching Warden play the exasperated manager, and the baseball premise gives the series a different setting from its usual mysterious towns and unsettling apartments. But I never connected with the episode as a whole.
Twilight Zone Verdict: Didn’t Land
