Happiness (1990)

This definitely leans more into that UK dance/alternative space than a straight pop or rock record.

The beats and rhythms drive almost everything here, and most of the album lives in that club-ready, electronic sound. But within that, there are moments where it shifts toward something closer to a traditional pop song — and that’s where it really clicked for me.

Vocally, I kept hearing shades of Depeche Mode and INXS — that same smooth, controlled delivery. Musically, though, it leans more toward polished dance production, something closer to Seal, with steady grooves carrying everything forward. There are even flashes that reminded me of Spandau Ballet in how melody and style come together.

The tracks I kept coming back to were the ones that leaned more into song structure. “Hello,” “Time After Time,” “Don’t You Worry,” and “Found” feel like full pop songs built on top of dance rhythms rather than just straight club tracks.

The more dance-focused moments didn’t land as much for me, but that’s more about my own taste than anything the album is doing wrong. It knows exactly what it is and sticks to it.

It’s smooth, consistent, and easy to settle into — especially when those melodies come through.

Verdict: Worth a Spin
