The Word as Law (1990)

This is one that sits somewhere in the heavier end of things, but it didn’t feel like it was just trying to overwhelm me.

It leans more toward hardcore than straight metal at times, but the songs can go hard — loud, aggressive, full of that same menace — but they don’t feel like they’re just blasting through everything.

There’s structure here.

Underneath the vocals and noise, there are melodies trying to push through. And instead of just hitting you all at once, the songs build into those moments. They take their time a little more, which gives everything more weight when it finally lands.

There are also some really strong bass moments throughout — little pockets where things open up just enough to notice what’s going on underneath all that heaviness.

It still has that intense, confrontational edge, but it feels more thoughtful than a lot of what I’ve heard in this lane so far.I don’t know that I fully connected with all of it, but I definitely appreciated what it was doing.

Verdict: Worth a Spin
