The Obsessed (1990)

This album leans into a sludgy, bluesy kind of metal, but it doesn’t really feel like full-on doom to me. It sits closer to hard rock, just heavier and a little rougher around the edges.

The whole thing has a strong 1970s feel — riff-driven, groove-heavy, and built around melody as much as weight. The guitars lead the way, the drums hit hard without overcomplicating things, and everything locks into that steady, grounded feel.

There’s a cool balance here between heaviness and accessibility. It never feels rushed or overly aggressive — more like it’s settling into a groove and staying there.

A few tracks stood out right away. “Tombstone Highway,” “Ground Out,” “Freedom,” and “Inner Turmoil” all lean into that core sound — heavy, bluesy, and built around strong riffs.“River of Soul” was probably my favorite. It has that grungy edge, and the vocals gave me a bit of an Ozzy feel, which fits perfectly with the whole throwback vibe.

It’s not trying to reinvent anything, but it doesn’t need to. It knows exactly what it’s going for and sticks to it.

Verdict: Worth a Spin
