Beginnings (1990)

This is a compilation, which I’ve mostly been skipping — but with something like this, it makes sense. For a lot of bands like Portable Rock, this might’ve been the easiest way to hear them in the United States at the time.

The sound sits somewhere between synthpop and new wave, with a bit of a modern rock feel mixed in. There are some lush arrangements, but also a lightness to everything — nothing feels too heavy, even when it gets a little quirky.

“Picnic” sets a really nice tone right away — relaxed, melodic, and easy to settle into. “Golem Polka” leans more playful, while “Vineyard in Winter” slows things down into something gentler.

“Jidousha Race” is one of the catchier moments, and “Ijiwaru Denpa” stands out for how off-kilter it feels — a little herky-jerky, but still fun.

Everything here is in Japanese, so I’m sure I’m missing the lyrical nuance and messing up the song titles, but the mood still comes through clearly.

It’s a really pleasant listen overall — something that drifts between indie pop and new wave without ever feeling locked into one thing.

Verdict: Worth A Spin
