So Said Kay (1990)

This is a short, five-track EP that leans heavily into the more melancholy side of indie pop.

Everything about it — the music, the vocals, the lyrics — feels reflective. It’s intricate without being busy, and there’s a softness to it that keeps everything grounded even when the emotions run a little deeper.

“Landmark” sets the tone with this sense of quiet resignation, like something has already ended and you’re just sitting with it. “Quicksilver” lifts things slightly — still introspective, but with a brighter edge, looking back on something you can’t quite return to. It’s really pretty.

“Indian Ocean” keeps that feeling going, built around delicate guitar work and a more optimistic tone, like it’s reaching toward something instead of looking back.

“So Said Kay” stands out a bit stylistically — there’s a hint of The Smiths in the vocal phrasing, but it’s layered with something closer to chamber pop, giving it a slightly more abstract feel as it builds.

It’s a small batch of songs, but it holds together really well. Everything sits in that same emotional space without feeling repetitive.

Quiet, a little sad, and really nicely done.

Verdict: Good
