Album by They Might Be Giants
Look, I’m in the bag for They Might Be Giants.
They could record themselves reading appliance manuals and I’d probably find a hook in it that would delight me. So take this with the appropriate amount of salt — but Eyeball is another gem.
These three new songs sound like classic TMBG nuggets: catchy, irreverent, clever, and — as always — deeper than they initially let on. That’s the trick with them. The melodies are bright. The arrangements feel playful. The lyrics sometimes feel irreverent and absurd. And then a line hits you sideways and you realize there’s more going on under the surface. Tight, smart songwriting disguised as whimsy.
There’s something comforting about the consistency. Decades in, and they still sound like themselves. Still curious. Still melodic. Still funny in a way that doesn’t feel cynical.
If this EP is a sign that more is coming, I’m all in.
The world is genuinely better and brighter with They Might Be Giants in it.
Verdict: Great (because of course it is)
