Directed by David Freyne – Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, Callum Turner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph
A woman in the afterlife must choose which of her husbands she wants to spend eternity with.
I really had a good time with this one.
It starts off feeling like a pretty straightforward, slightly offbeat rom-com setup, but it keeps shifting in small ways that make it feel fresher than that. It leans into some familiar beats, but never fully settles into them.
What worked for me most is how it handles the central choice. The movie never really tips its hand toward what the “right” answer is supposed to be. I found myself going back and forth, thinking I knew where it was headed, only for it to pull me in the other direction again. It trusts the audience to sit in that uncertainty.
Elizabeth Olsen really holds the whole thing together. The movie depends on whether you believe her conflict, and I did. There’s a sincerity to her performance that makes the emotional side of this land, and she balances that with some really strong comedic moments.
Miles Teller is pitch perfect. He’s playing someone with decades of life experience in a younger body, and every time that comes through — in small gestures or reactions — it really felt authentic. It’s also where a lot of the humor comes from, and I found myself laughing more than I expected.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph is great as well. At this point she just shows up and makes everything better. She’s quickly become one of those people I’m always happy to see, and she brings a lot of really good, natural humor to it.
What I appreciated most is that the film doesn’t really get lost in its premise. It sets up something that could easily become overly philosophical or heavy, but instead keeps the focus on something more grounded. It’s less about the rules of the afterlife and more about how we think about love, memory, and the choices we carry with us.
It made me laugh, it got me a little emotional, and it stuck with me more than I expected.
Verdict: Excellent
