The Twilight Zone “The Fever” (1960)

A man who despises gambling wins a trip to Las Vegas, only to become convinced that a slot machine is calling out to him.

This episode plays with the idea of obsession and temptation. What begins as a simple vacation quickly spirals into paranoia as the protagonist becomes fixated on a slot machine he believes is speaking directly to him.

Everett Sloane throws himself fully into the role, leaning into the character’s growing mania as the obsession takes hold. The episode manages to create a slightly eerie atmosphere as the man’s grip on reality begins to slip.

Unfortunately, the direction of the plot wasn’t exactly a surprise, and the characters themselves are difficult to sympathize with. Without a strong emotional connection or an unexpected twist, I had trouble investing myself in this episode.

Twilight Zone Verdict: Didn’t Land
